If you've been waiting for a wireless Skype-enabled phone, the CIT200 is it. But when we made calls to Skype users, used Skype Out to call conventional phones, and received calls from conventional landline phones through Skype In, users' comments ranged from "sounds like a cordless phone" to "excellent." The CIT200 lacks an analog port, so we were unable to test the audio quality quantitatively. Skype Out is a premium service that lets you call any phone, and the new Skype In service is in public beta testing. The CIT200 supports all three contact types. Online Skype contacts display first, followed by Out and then Offline Skype contacts. When you push this key, the handset links to the Skype client and displays your entire Skype contact list. Probably the most important control, however, is the Skype button. In addition to the normal keypad, dial, and hang-up buttons of most cordless phones, the CIT200 has two "soft" buttons, a four-position navigation control, and buttons for an intercom and for direct access to either a shared or private address book. The kit supports as many as four handsets. When you turn on the handset, it will automatically sync with the base station. In our tests, it performed well, providing complete coverage in our 6,000-square-foot lab.įor installation, which is very straightforward, you run a wizard on the Skype client computer, then plug in the USB base station. The CIT200 has a range of 50 meters indoors and as much as 300 meters outdoors. This ensures against interference with 802.11a/b/g wireless networks.

Most conventional cordless phones operate in the 2.4-GHz or 5-GHz bands, but the CIT200 operates on one of 60 available full duplex channels in the 1.920 through 1.930-GHz band. It comes with a separate charging base and uses easily replaceable NiMH triple-A rechargeable batteries, which the company claims provide 120 hours of standby time and 10 hours of talk time. The CIT200 comes complete with everything needed to get you started right away: a desktop phone charger, two rechargeable AA batteries, a power adaptor. The handset has a small (1 1/8 by 0.75 inches) illuminated color LCD and a speakerphone. Call qualitys on a par with the Linksys CIT200 we trialled earlier in the year just like a normal landline and we didnt have any problems getting it.
